The Broadmoor, a five-star, five-diamond resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado, announced that Cloud Camp, a wilderness retreat on Colorado’s Cheyenne Mountain, will open August 15.

Sitting 3,000 feet above The Broadmoor, at an elevation of 9,200 feet, Cloud Camp is on the historic 1924 site of Broadmoor founder Spencer Penrose’s original Cheyenne Lodge, and overlooks Pikes Peak to the north and the Colorado Rockies to the west.

The 8,000-sf Main Lodge is designed to capture the feel of the historic timber and stone lodges found in some of the great national parks of the U.S., with hand-hewn beans, two stone fireplaces and art depicting the great American West. The great room inspires relaxed gatherings with Adirondack chairs, rockers and a dining table for 28, while the library welcomes guests with books and board games. An expansive wrap-around deck offers magnificent views.

Sleeping 56 guests in total, guest rooms feature hickory wood flooring and hickory paneled wood walls. Custom-designed beds are outfitted with feather beds and beautiful throws, while leather chairs and custom area rugs further define the western feel of the property.

The Main Lodge offers seven guest rooms, including a suite perched on a rock outcropping, which features a copper soaking tub, fireplace, and private patio. A short walk from the Main Lodge are 11 one- and two-bedroom cabins, each with private porches and views of Pike National Forest and Colorado’s Front Range.

Unique to Cloud Camp is the Fire Tower Suite, a spectacular suite accessed by way of 145 steps, perched atop a historic Colorado fire tower, which features 360-degree views.

The culinary program at Cloud Camp is inspired by the Rabbit Club, an eating and drinking club for Philadelphia bluebloods that Spencer Penrose brought to Colorado Springs in 1914. The cuisine of Cloud Camp is inspired by the life and times of Penrose during this Golden Age of the 1920s with reimagined interpretations of the classics of the time period, such as Beef Wellington, Duck a l’Orange, Filets de Sole Newburg, and Apple Tarte Tatin. The celebration of this era is carried through to the beverage program, featuring Cloud Camp’s signature Spiced Rum Punch during cocktail hour, where Caviar & Blinis are served, and after dinner as Hot Toddies are enjoyed around the fireplace — preserving Penrose’s vision that gourmet meals should be shared.

Says Tina Harlow, general manager of Cloud Camp, “From its spectacular locale atop Cheyenne Mountain, to its inspiring culinary program, Cloud Camp is a truly unique experience for our guests. Introducing the property to our growing Wilderness Experience portfolio, which also includes The Ranch at Emerald Valley, The Broadmoor’s Fishing School, and The Broadmoor’s Fishing Camp, continues to define our commitment to offering exceptional and varied guest experiences.

During their stay, guests hike in the Pike National Forest, enjoy birding, photo safaris, and rock art, as well as assist chef each evening with the preparation of the Social Hour hors d’oeuvres.

To arrive at Cloud Camp, guests check in at The Broadmoor and have the option of being transported to Cloud Camp in a four-wheel vehicle, on the back of a mule or by way of a guided three-hour hike. Luggage is transported separately.
