Sorority Donates Meals After Convention Cut Short

The threat of Tropical Storm Barry caused the huge Delta Sigma Theta sorority convention at the Morial Convention Center to end days early. But the meals that the members of the service organization planned to dine on won’t go to waste. Instead, the roughly 17,000 portions of chicken breast, potatoes au gratin, mac and cheese, flour-less chocolate cake and other items were donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank for future distribution to the hungry.

Amy Sins, a chef and anti-hunger activist who leads an organization called Flood & Disaster Outreach-New Orleans Cooks, said via email that “the provisions were donated by Centerplate caterers on behalf of Delta Sigma Theta.” Sins said she contacted the Second Harvest Food Bank, which dispatched a refrigerated truck to retrieve the pallets of frozen and chilled food.
