So Many New Rooms In The City, But Still Talk Of A Convention Center Hotel

When it comes to building a big hotel attached to the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Craig Davis may be the lone voice crying out in the wilderness.

That’s particularly true given the hotel building boom in and near Downtown that has added nearly 1,500 rooms in the last five years.

There appears to be little appetite among hoteliers and even the convention center owner to erect a 500- to 600-room hotel that likely would require heavy financial subsidies.

Two years ago, even Mr. Davis, president and CEO of tourism group VisitPittsburgh, was in that camp, conceding the long-cherished hotel was on the back burner. “Right now the marketplace is somewhat strained,” he said at the time.
